To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c BJ. WGR. RG.{Mr Rowledge} C. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} EY. X3841 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/ACLL/T29.11.26. FALCON X. INDUCTION SYSTEM. X3874 for prints We have made some experiments with the Claudel Hobson carburetters in the Vee with the object of developing the induction manifolds to give improved cold distribution with carburetters in this position. As a basis for these experiments we used the original manifolds produced for these carburetters in the "Vee" - Des.445 & 446 -and altered from time to time the contour of the interior passages, as tests indicated were required, by means of hard wood inserts. The original manifolds possessed the inherent characteristic of supplying cylinders Nos.3 and 4 with an over-rich mixture while the end cylinders Nos.1 and 6 were slightly weak. The reason for this we think is due to the resultant direction of the mixture flow having as bias towards the more distant cylinders, Nos.3 and 4, as indicated in the attached diagram. The result was indicative that it was required to "screen" the end cylinders without of course reducing (Contd). [Text from diagram] Cyl 1. 2. 3.
