Swor files 1360? Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 2 / R.{Sir Henry Royce} James Watt Engineering Laboratories, The University, Glasgow. 1129 ? 29th Jan. Dear Mr Robotham Thanks for your letter of the 24th inst. & for the report on the question of exhaust valve closing. The difficulty appears to lie in the length of the toe used in your cams. The engines I have been accustomed to were not designed primarily for quiet operation & the cams have no toe to speak of & the timing I give refers to main acceleration & deceleration. I think the best plan would be to leave the question open till I produce a system for the Alvis engine which I have just put on my test bed. The final diagrams of pressure in the manifold will tell me whether the time of exhaust valve closing is to be very important or not. I haven't got this engine running yet as there are lots of fitments to be made & I have to be my own mechanic at present consequently | ||
