Rolls Royce Ltd. Derby. England. (Copy for attention of Mr. Royce.) Dear Sir, RE. BRAKE SPRINGS. We enclose herewith for the attention of Mr. Royce a photograph of five springs taken from the inner and outer brake shoes of a Springfield car which had run 33,000 miles. While neither the ferodo not the iron linings were worn half way through, the brake had to be taken down and the springs replaced because the springs had become too weak to pull the shoes off with certainty. It is apparent from the photograph that the heat from the shoes had softened the outer ends of the springs. We therefore wish to suggest the use of a connecting link between the spring and the shoe which would have sufficient radiating surface so that heat would not reach the spring. (SGD.) OY.
