Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Gun ? Cgh{W Clough}/EM.7/J.25.7.40. 2 Re: Taylor Bros. Manchester. I am attaching hereto a letter received from Messrs. Taylor Bros. in regard to a suggestion I made when we visited them regarding the possibility of them undertaking to make our cylinder liner steel which is required by our manipulators in the form of 9" dia. turned round bars. The letter is not very encouraging and of course gives no particulars as to why they do not consider they can forge down ingots under their three thousand ton press which I should have thought would have been quite satisfactory for the purpose. If it is a question of additional tools, I should imagine that we should be able to assist them as their steel making capacity is very attractive to us at the present moment particularly in view of the definite shortage of steel for cylinder liners which is largely due to the fact that 9" dia. bars are outside the capacity of most of the British Steel makers.
