X.4338 - 20 H.P. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM.

Answering your RJ5/H19-7-23. we have not received anything further from R. {Sir Henry Royce} since our EFC {E. Fowler Clarke - Electrical Engineer} 1/T12.7.23.

The suggestion in our fourth paragraph was put forward with the idea of suggesting new possibilities to R. {Sir Henry Royce} rather than one which would entirely meet the case. We realise that it would have certain limitations, but if used, the suggested warning given on the battery box might be as attached half sheet.

Perhaps it would appear to be more satisfactory to disconnect the dynamo wires as suggested by R's warning, but we do think that the warning should be placed on the battery box, and think it would be sufficient for the wording to be:-

W A R N I N G!

WHENEVER BATTERY IS REMOVED, DISCONNECT WIRES FROM DYNAMO.

The warning, of course, would only be applicable to chassis provided with magnetos.

We think we can take it for granted that in 95% of the cases disconnection and removal of the battery are synonymous. Also, so long as failure of the battery is not a case of a broken lug, or a case in which the electrolyte has all dried away, the battery may be left connected with the object of controlling the system, which it will do even though faulty from a capacity point of view.

Our personal opinion, which appears also to be held by BY. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} and Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} , is that the warning suggested by R. {Sir Henry Royce} should not be placed on the instrument board.

We consider, however, that we can go ahead with the preparation of a suitable warning plate to affix in a suitable place on the battery box, the text of which might be agreed to by all concerned to be as above.
