Tp EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} c. to EH. 19/5/16 COPY R2/C16516. May 16th, 1916. Many thanks for the car testing as regards ignition point. I am, however, still under the impression that the additional advance of the magneto is an advantage in consumption for road conditions of running with weakened mixtures. I believe that the bad cunsumption often experienced may possibly be wrapt up in a method of driving which consists of keeping the throttle just open slightly so that the engine is pulling slightly most of the time, whereas - to obtain good consumption - perhaps it is necessary for the throttle to be wide open or completely closed alternately according to the power demanded - never half measures. You will see in my recent memo that I have suggested that the bad consumption we are having recently, may be due to a larger induction pipe, and may also be improved by having a slower moving air valve, so as to get better running with a weaker mixture. Some of these ideas might be tested and possibly introduced in our Instruction Book if we can state definitely how better consumption can be obtained. I am obtaining 10 m.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} to the gallon for local short journeys and something over 14 for a long cross country journey. R.{Sir Henry Royce} 409 | ||
