AUTO KLEEN FILTER TO LeC. 2790/1.-

With the exception of a small leak of oil from the gland of the spindle, it has in every way given good results. The ratchet arrangement has functioned perfectly. No objection can be taken to the slight noise it makes when operated. The filter had collected a fair amount of fluff and dirt which had dropped to the bottom of the container. No dirt or fluff was adhering to the vanes when examined.

SUMP DRAIN PLUG TO LeC 2788.-

There is no trouble in the draining of the sump with the new position of the drain. A feature which may have been overlooked is the bronze screwed bush is not locked in the crankcase, and instead of the aluminium plug being taken out the bush screws out with it.

SPRING DRIVE TO L.O.P. E.79915. LeC 2462/2520.-

The low inertia spring drive with the spring plate E.77391 machined to allow no stress of the plate to interfere with the spring loading is quite satisfactory. The load of the spring drive has remained consistent and smooth slipping without any stickiness. There has been no sign of crankshaft periods or bus knock. The slipping load is 22 lbs. at 17.5 radius.

CYLINDERS TO L.O.P. E.79033 INCORPORATING SCH. 1247/8 EXTRA CYLINDER LUBRICATION & SCH. 1217 ASBESTOS VALVE GLAND PACKINGS.-

The extra cylinder lubrication has not presented any audible piston knocks during starting up from cold, and no sign of seizure has been noticed. The asbestos gland packings have remained in the condition as first fitted. There is no sign of excess oil passing down the valve stems, as the slow running test after each run shewed a clear exhaust.

VALVES & FITTINGS TO L.O.P. E.78569. E.80599 TAPPETS 2% NICKEL CASE HARDENING STEEL.-

The exhaust valve in No. 3 cylinder gave trouble at a mileage of 1.854 and 2.355 by stretching and losing the clearance between the rocker and valve, causing the engine to run erratic towards the end of the day's mileage. The valve was taken out and replaced by a spare valve which has not given any trouble. No. 4 exhaust valve was also changed, as it was inclined to lose its clearance. No. 3 exhaust valve head had decreased in dia. .01965". There has been a camshaft squawk which is caused by lack of lubrication between the rubbing faces of the tappets and cams in conjunction with roughing up of the sliding surfaces. We have examined the tappets and they appear to be in quite a normal condition.
