INTER-DEPARTMENTAL MEMORANDUM

TO MR. C. A.{Mr Adams} CHAYNE
C & E, Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}
Copy for American & Buick files

DATE March 25th, 1937.

In answer to the questions submitted by Mr. W. A.{Mr Adams} Robotham, we are furnishing you with the following information:

1.- Taken as a whole, we feel that the threaded shackle is better than any type available. There are very few complaints on noise. Those which we have had, have been due to warping of the threaded bolt, or bushing, during heat-treatment.

2.- We do not have shock damper noise on the 1937 cars. This noise was present in some of the front shock absorbers on our 1936 Models. We attributed this noise in the shocks on the 1936 Models, to the rotation of the piston, which hit the side of the cam. This noise when found was in new cars. This was overcome in 1937 by installing anti-rotation springs between the piston and the cam.

3.- We do not use rubber in the front end of the rear spring anchorage, but do use rubber between the rear spring and the axle.

4.- Weights:
The requested weights are given on the attached sheet.

5.- Exhaust System:
The power loss due to the muffler and tail pipe, and the difference in power of the 1-3/4" and 2" tail pipe equipped engines are shown on the attached curves.
