With reference to the special nut introduced on the torque tube.
This nut of small diameter and greater axial length has proved so beneficial that I at once decided in my mind that we should use it as standard. I do not think, however, that it is quite suitable for grover washers or for general purposes without the solid circular part which I suggested and which necessitates it being turned from a round bar and milled hexagon.
The reason why we want to stick to these nuts is because by their use we actually reduce the stresses in the case of flanges as well as save a material quantity of metal in the flanges. These points are so important as to justify our using at greater expense these special nuts.
At an early date I should like samples sent to me of those they are using (hexagon throughout) of the grover spring washers which is used in connection with them, and a sample nut of my suggestion with the circular part where there is deficiency of face and maximum bursting stress. This smaller nut with my modifications will I think be found somewhat superior to the present standard larger size nut.
