November 1939. Messrs. John Thompson Ltd., Chassis Frame Section, Wolverhampton. Dear Sirs, Re. Bentley Chassis Frame. We would be very pleased if you would give us your help in the matter of chassis frame design. You have produced for us the latest Bentley frame in .104" thick material. Let it be supposed that we may want for the production of another car that same frame but in .064" thick material. We would like to know whether exactly the same dies could be used, and if so, how would you deal with the fit of the frame cross and front pan into the side members to account for the changed dimensions resulting from the change of material thickness. Alternatively, if only one half of the dies of the side members, cross etc. could be used, which half would you preserve, in view of the problem the fitting of the frame cross, gussets and front pan to the chassis side member. Your help in this matter will be very welcome. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. CHASSIS DESIGN OFFICE. | ||
