PRÉCIS OF ARTICLE ON CHASSIS FRICTION LOSSES. Journal of Automotive Engineers. Nov. 1922. Measurement of rolling resistance of wheel. Simplest method - Tow with spring balance. Disadvantages Slow speed only. Dynamometer. Let rear wheels of car rest on drum with weight on them and observe current required to drive drum and wheels (by electric motor) at any given revs. Remove wheels and note power required to drive drums only at same speed. Now add load by prony brake until 1st. reading of current is duplicated. Added load is equal to tr.{Capt. F. W. Turner - Finance} resistance of wheels, when expressed in lbs. at circumference of drum. Tests carried out as above. (a) Wheels only. Front axle on drums. (b) Wheels and transmission. Rear axle on drums. (c) Engine resistance. Rear axle on drums. (d) Tyre resistance. Front axle tyres just touching. " " " fully loaded. Results obtained. (a) Friction loss in tyres is equal to 2/3 total chassis friction, excluding the engine. contd:- | ||
