Re Chassis 65-MW...Lord Herbert Scott.
-----

In answer to your C10/C20.11.33 the above car is fitted with low rated springs, and they have the usual characteristics of swaying and rolling at high speed.

We increased the shock damper poundage to the maximum and at the same time we reduced the leakage of the valves of same. This gave very little improvement as regards rolling and swaying, but it did actually damp out the excessive bump when passing over bad potholes.

In my view, as GHS. and his passengers have not had low rated springs before it is obvious that this type of springing does not suit them, and it would be advisable to change the springs to the standard type.

For record purposes we took particulars of the existing springs, and in case you are communicating with Derby with a view to the changeover, the following are the buffer clearances taken with passengers on board:-

Nearside front 2"
Offside front 2"
Nearside rear 4 3/4"
Offside rear 4 1/2"

Derby will see from the above that the rear springs are on the strong side for the load carried, and they will probably be glad to supply standard springs slightly weaker. Otherwise we may afterwards receive a complaint of harshness.
