STEADMAN Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} C. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} x6003 BY.16/G.4.8.36. Min / N/STD CHASSIS - DISTANCE READING THERMOMETER. We have received a sample thermometer made up with a much smaller capillary tube than standard, with the tube itself armoured or protected by the long open spiral spring. We cannot find that anyone in our Department have asked for this particular instrument, and we are sending same on to you, as in any case you will have to consider the matter, and we are inclined to think that the enquiry made have arisen from your Department. I should criticise the question of armouring the capillary tube, particularly with a long open spiral spring of the type used, as I should anticipate movement taking place between the protecting spring and the capillary tube, with the result that the latter may get worn through locally at some point where a high speed vibration is set up in service.
