Re-facing clutch plates already fitted with Thermoid.
Phantom III, 25/30 H.P. and Bentley.

We have a few isolated cases of trouble with snatch or judder (mainly P.III) with clutches which have already been fitted with Thermoid, probably due to 'picking-up' of metallic particles from the flywheel or pressure plate, or to the pressure of oil on the facings.

In the case of 3.CP.190 and 3.BU.28, the Thermoid faced plates have been returned to Borg & Beck for re-facing, with a printed form to O.D. which reads "We are of opinion that rectification should be carried out free of charge".

We cannot agree with this claim unless there is actual evidence of defective fitting, because Borg & Beck purchase the Thermoid to our instructions, and it is not their fault or responsibility if the facing occasionally 'picks-up'.

Would you therefore please let the writer have an opportunity of examining any Thermoid plates which have failed in service, firstly because we are anxious to gain all available experience by examination of failures, and secondly we could advise you if we think there is any ground for claiming F.O.C. replacement.
