With reference to your query concerning the fitting of 6.50 x 17 tyres with wheels to suit on Bentley chassis prior to 'M' series, the following are our opinions. The use of large tyres on the rear only is undoubtedly the best arrangement for these chassis as the car is directionally more stable owing to reduction of oversteer, more than half the improvement in comfort due to large tyres is obtained, and the steering is not made any heavier. In the event of a front tyre being punctured, there is no objection to running for a day or so with one large and one small tyre on the front. If large tyres are fitted all round the same improvement in stability and the full improvement in comfort are obtained, but the steering will be appreciably heavier.
