Proposed material change for a spring in a distribution box cutout due to a functional issue.

On further considering the rubbing or rolling action required on the cutout contacts, I have discovered that the standard cutout is not working as was originally intended, that is, when operating the tip of the spring carrying the upper contact should be lifted off the armature, as this does not take place it is obvious that the spring is too strong. I therefore suggested to Mr. Brock that we should try a spring made from .004 nickel strip, that being the only material available in such fineness and that gave the rolling action required. I am now getting the O.O. to obtain 6 springs in spring steel of a similar thickness, so that you may be able to test these out. I think steel will carry the current at this point and should be more consistent than the so-called spring quality phosphor bronze which we are now using and which varies with each delivery. If this is successful it would be a very simple alteration to effect. You may have some suitable material in your Dept. from which you could make a spring and try in the meantime. BY {R.W.
