PROGRAMME OF TEST BED WORK.

B.80 NO.5 UNIT.

New unit now being assembled for test prior to being fitted in 30.G.VII for 15,000 miles test.

Special features include:-

(1) 2 3/4 journal crankshaft ex B.80 No.4 unit.

(2) Vandervell 3-layer main bearings.

(3) 4 inlet valve springs (parallel in Swedish wire)
4 " " (taper in S/SV. Ph.III type).

(4) Crankcase cast in Ni-Cro-Mo.
Nos. 1, 2, 7 and 8 Solid bores.
Nos. 3 and 4 Hichro short inserts.
Nos. 5 and 6 Ni-Cro-Mo short inserts

(5) Exhaust valve seats.
Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 solid.
Nos. 5 and 6 Ni-Cro-Mo R.R. produced.
Nos. 7 and 8 Brico seats.

Inlet valve seats in 3 1/2% nickel.

(6) Studebaker crank damper.

(7) EB.4512 short duration camshaft.

After running in, the following tests to be carried out:-

(1) Power curve (previously found best valve timing) both open exhaust and with Buick type exhaust system.

(2) Valve bounce (Inlets) speed also with silencer.
