Frame width Track increase TO - {CU. DJ. RM.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} S. BT.{Capt. J. S. Burt - Engineer} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}} FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} A.{Mr Adams} C. 11. 18770/C830 It will be remembered that we have modified the frame in the side elevation to facilitate the fixing of the front spring rear bracket. We have pushed the joggle further back so as to help with the body building, we have added length to the rear end so as to make it easier for the tank protecting luggage grid. We are now proposing that in the plan view the frame at the front shall remain as at present, 30" wide, but shall be 1" wider in the rear part, and the track of the back wheels is to be made 57" instead of 56" so as to match the track of the front wheels. We believe that the extra width will be advantageous when the moderate sized balloon tyres are fitted. This increased width at the back has a slight advantage in the arrangement of the exhaust pipes, but it is understood that we are arranging for the tie-rod to be a straight line in the plan, but that owing to the frame going out ½" a side the rear end will go out ½" a side, and we intend to fit the front attachment of the tie-rod also ½" further out than at present. Mr. Evernden will send to Mr. Bailey the necessary instructions, and Mr. Bailey will issue the modified coach-builders drawing for this chassis. It will be noticed that the car should be slightly more stable from rolling, and that the woodwork of the runners will not require to be quite so wide. .R. | ||
