To EH. from BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Copy to EFC. 26th September, 1917. BY13/G26917. RE THRUST BEARING STEEL - X.3186. Mr. Royce, in his memo Rl/B18717, recommended that we should obtain specimens of the steel which is used by the Skefko Ball Bearing Co., and also specimens of the steel supplied by Messrs. Firth to Hoffmanns'. We have succeeded in obtaining six test pieces in bar form, and six blanks from the Skefko Co. From Messrs. Firth we have obtained two bars (one 4 1/2" diameter x 12 long, and the other 5 1/4" diameter by 6" long) I would suggest that in addition to the tests which Mr. Hall has made, we should produce roller bearing G.5128/9 from both specimens of steel, and also ball thrust bearings G.5348 (2 off) G.5349 (1 off) from both types of steel. One set of each should be hardened in the ordinary way, and should be examined to see whether there is any soft skin after grinding. Mr. Royce also proposes that sets of the same parts should be hardened by a firm who specialise on a system which does not decarbonise the face of the steel. I am endeavouring to find out the name of a firm, at present I cannot get any definite information. BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} | ||
