EH1/LG.301018. ---------------- RE "EAGLE" PARTS MADE IN AMERICA+ X.3381. We are running an "Eagle" engine and fitted with the following American parts - Cylinders, Connecting Rods, Pistons, Valves and Crankshaft. The engine hasso far compleeted 40 hrs. We have already sent a report as regards cylinders; the condition of the other parts is as follows:- CONNECTING RODS The rodsweretaken straight out of the packing case and bolted on to the crankshaft. We did not do any bedding or fitting. The bolts on the rods which we had were quite good. We examined these rods after 35 hrs. run- ning on the hanger at 1800 revs. We found that the bedding of three of them was very good. On two of the, it was fair and one had scored slightly. We found that wherethe rods were a poor bed, it was the crank pin which was not parallel. In two cases the pins were .0005" small in the centre gradually tapering out towards each end. From the appearance, the American rods appear to have been bedded to a bar. The bed when tried on a parallel bar was very good. We consider, however, that to retain the same quality, we shall have to bed the bearings each to their own crank pin as we do at present at the Works. Contd: | ||
