contd :- -3- noise to overcome is the knock which comes from the tappet itself. This is caused by a rotational movement of the tappet. It means dismantling a lot of parts to get at these tappets. We also get a certain amount of tappet noise owing to the fact that the cylinders expand more than the tappet rods and at the normal temperatures the valve clearance is more than we have on the Silver Ghost. In order to correct this we have tried tappet rods in other material but they have not been satisfactory. Modified tappets have also been tried in which the key to prevent the tappet turning is made solid with the tappet. These tappets are fitted to 12-EX car, but it is reported that 12-EX tappets are noisy. It was agreed sometime ago that we should try some of the self-adjusting hydraulic tappets. We think these will be worth going on with in view of the considerable amount of time which is spent adjusting tappets. (8) BRAKE SQUEAKS. We know of no means of entirely overcoming these. (9) IMPROVEMENT IN ACCESSIBILITY OF CHASSIS LUBRICATION. We think this is very desirable. As we understand Springfield have standardised the Bijur system, we ought to be able to obtain some useful information from them. (10) FAILURE OF PETROL SUPPLY. From recent information we believe a large number of cases in which dirt and ineffective filters has been complained of, the trouble has been due to an air lock in the petrol pipe - the petrol pipes have not been fitted correctly. contd :- | ||
