'SS{S. Smith}' VALVE ROCKER LUBRICATION. X7090

We have noted the two rocker lubrication schemes shown on LeC. 2663/4 and have put this in hand so that we may test as soon as possible. The scheme for carrying oil under pressure to the tappet ball end we should expect to be a considerable help in cushioning and taking up the tappet clearance during the warming up period when the cyl. block expansion is in advance of that of the push rods.

Up to the moment on all the experimental cars we have employed the scheme with small flats on the rocker shaft and although we have not experienced trouble with it we know there is an objection to the restricted form of slot due to the possibility of stoppage by foreign matter. Our F.{Mr Friese} engines have flats on the rocker shaft for supplying oil to the bushes and cam follower pads and these have been satisfactory, but the scheme is not quite the same as tested on the 'SS{S. Smith}' engine.

It will therefore be advisable to withold rocker shafts and rocker parts until we have tested out these new schemes. We will report as soon as these tests have been made.

Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/A.{Mr Adams} C. Lovesey.
