shortly be available for test.

(3) P.I. We have two alternatives for P.I both of which are unproved. (Malleable iron castings, and sliding joint type manifolds). The Repair Dept. have fitted 4 sets of malleable iron manifolds.

We suggest that these alternatives should be fitted in preference to the standard type which fails.

(4) P.II. Nothing has as yet been done on this car, it appears that a local stiffening up of the flange should overcome this trouble. This will be attended to.

Exhaust Silencer corroded - Total complaints 13.

There are several anti-corrosive treatments available on the market at the present time. We have previously tried various treatments but owing to the fact that we have had no experimental cars suffer from corrosion, we have not been able to obtain any reliable data. In addition our previous anti-corrosion treatments have been applied to silencer parts which have been built up complete.

It appears that the corrosion always starts from inside and works outwards, so that any treatment must be applied to the materials before they are built up. Other data indicates that cars on which this trouble occurs are driven quite slowly and at intervals - cars driven fast and often do not give trouble. This rather indicates that the trouble is due to condensation in the silencer and insufficient evaporation on cars which are not driven hard, and in consequence of which the silencers do not get hot. There is no evidence to prove that deletion of the drain holes has made this trouble worse. It appears necessary to examine all the available anti-corrosive treatments and to adopt the best both for production and repair replacements.

Exhaust cut-out - 22 total (all P.II)

The trouble and cure are stated on the quarterly complaint list. There are many cases on which this trouble is likely to be met - it is really one with the sliding joint trouble for which No.199 is a cure. At least 700 cars affected.

Exhaust butterfly valve seizing (P.I only)

There are 9 complaints from this cause and a definite cure is made by fitting nitralloy spindles in conjunction with cast iron bushes.
