C. to SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} P. 2. GEARBOX.

We have a very good and simple reverse.

The introduction of the helical 3rd. speed gave us the trouble of providing an extra gear to drive this reverse, and we ran into the trouble of the gear working out.

Providing we accept the slight imperfection of picking up the revs. when using 1st. speed we have now found a simple gear which does not require this extra gear, and is altogether smaller and a simpler scheme which we are including in the synchronous mesh P. 2. box.

We have noticed that as we ought not to have a clutch brake when using synchro mesh we have not this to help with 2nd. speed, but we expect that it will be OK. without it.

In our last 2 schemes of reverse the lever handle naturally moves backwards in putting in the reverse, and we conclude that this is so undersirsable that we must reverse the motion in the box with extra mechanism, but our scheme is so good otherwise - i.e. it is the one where the 2nd. speed pinion drives the reverse.

The ratio of reverse is the same as 1st.
