x-066 To By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Lid.{A. J. Lidsey} c. to Roy.{Sir Henry Royce} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Lid.{A. J. Lidsey}3/RT.13.3.31. HYPOID AXLE LUBRICATION. With reference to BY8/G12.3.31., we are entirely in agreement with By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} in that we cannot depart from Whitmore's Compound "O" without very satisfactory proof that any alternative lubricant is suitable for the job. In view of our previous costly experience with Price's compound, we have decided that it would be an unwise step to even test another of their products before we have a sufficient guarantee that it will be good. We should therefore insist that the oil be approved by Gleasons as suitable for use with hypoid gears before we try it. Our works laboratory facilities are naturally insufficient to give us this information, and we do not doubt that Gleasons would willingly test any oil; they issue a list of oils suitable for hypoid gears.
