re. STARTER CARBURETTER.

With reference to your BY/Cghl/24.6.29.,
I suggest the following points require making clear in the Instruction Book:-

(1) The starter carburetter should only be used when the engine is cold and not for longer than ½ min. when the main carburetter is put into action and the starter carburetter turned off.

In warm weather, or when the engine is warm, the engine should start on the main carburetter, and this should always be tried before using the starter carburetter.

(2) The normal setting for this carburetter is ¼ turn from the closed position. It may be necessary to adjust this a little stronger up to ½ turn in cold weather, but this setting should always be re-set to ¼ turn during the warm weather, otherwise the mixture is too rich and the engine fails due to over-richness.

I certainly consider that something should be done on the starter carburetter prior to next Winter, so that adjustment to this carburetter is not required, which is the case at present.

This sensitive setting appears only to have come about since the fixing of the aluminium head. The general view expressed is to the effect that we have had more trouble with engines seizing up since the aluminium head was used.

If you still consider that the issuing of a pamphlet in the instruction book to this effect is impracticable, I suggest that at least a Depot Sheet should be issued, in which case will you please instruct accordingly.
