SECRET. X7080 Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} R5/M26.6.29. C. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} PN.{Mr Northey} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} C. SS.{S. Smith} - re. FUSS OR ROAR OF THE ENGINE. X7770 X7080 We cannot account for this other than by the more vigorous carburetter suction that this engine appears to have. We have decided to alter the carburetter by fitting an air cleaning silencer on both the extra air and the main air to the carburetter. We believe that this will have the desired effect and cure the chief cause of complaint against this chassis. We are sorry to see in your memo. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} that the Sales officials seem to give the impression that we have not achieved much in this chassis. We know however that it is a very definite improvement in the features which were so desirable, namely, riding qualities, acceleration, road-holding safety, and performance generally. I have no doubt that when it has been in production some little time, if you were to revert to the present chassis from any point of view you would be thankful that we had made the modifications which give us the improvements we believe are of such great importance.
