re PH.111 & 25/30 HP. MARLES TYPE STEERING CAMS.

I visited the above people today in connection with the above, and in response to a 'phone message from their Chief Inspector, who was in a quandary regarding the reading of some cams on the jig which we are still compelled to loan them for checking their product.

I inspected 15 - 25/30 Cams and passed 12, the 3 rejected still have the usual faults, - slack in centre, and tight spots either side, approximately 30 degrees to 45 degrees of travel of Steering Wheel.

Comm.Matrayers has been taken ill, so I got Mr.Ronald (Works Manager) on the job and pointed out to him the trouble, also showed him the cam I took down with me that has the pitted track surface, due to carburising and hardening, also pointed out to them we have rejected 3 - P.111 Cams out of the last batch of 15 received on Wednesday.

Two of these are rejected for large and out of round bores, due to faulty broaching and one has a small key approximately minus .005" on width.

I demonstrated to Mr.Ronald how narrow the margin is from the cutting of the 25/30 Cam to the finished Cam state, which leaves no allowance whatever for eccentricity during subsequent operations, and if this eccentricity should occur in the direction of the centre point of tooth the cam is unuseable.

The soft cam was demonstrated on the special mandril made for reclaiming the faulty cams, and the test suggested that if they were cut on an eccentric mandril (or Cones) they would stand a much better chance of a better final result.

Mr.Ronald is intending to give this a try out.
