EXTENDED EXHAUST PIPES.

With reference to LE4/C/3.3.33. and our run on 20-MY.

We understand that both you and Hn.{F. C. Honeyman - Retail orders} agree that if the pipe can be made flush with the rear crossmember of the chassis, it should be satisfactory from a fume point of view for the cars having extended backs which are at present going through.

Actually eighteen months ago we standardised such a swanneck and fishtail, the drawing number being E.82060, and the only reason it has not been fitted on production earlier is because there was a certain number of old fishtails to be used up and these lasted a long time because a number of cars have been put through where a special long fishtail has been asked for.

Chassis with the flush fishtail will be going on test next week.

Our test on 20-MY certainly shewed that the extra long fishtail does not necessarily produce exhaust booms on all cars. If the flush fishtail is satisfactory we should prefer to limit the length of exhaust to this.

Unless we hear from you, we shall not proceed with further experiments on the extra long fishtail.
