To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. Sft.{Mr Swift} EJJ. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer} E.5/HP.19.7.34. Referring to memo Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer}19/KW.9.7.34, the suggestion to use flywheels on rigs for lapping in gears was tried out by Colonel Barrington in these Works some time about 1913, but the results obtained at that time were not favourable. Youwill remember however, that when we visited Mr Pomeroy, at Daimlers, we found he was using these for lapping in worm gears for back axles. It, therefore, seems worth trying but it is obviously an essential feature to reduce flexibility between the flywheels and the gears to the least possible quantity if the results are to be in any way successful.
