X.677 To BJ. from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} S E C R E T. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}8/LGS.1.25. ROAD TESTS WITH E.A.C. CARS IN FRANCE. We have been making enquiries through HK.{Col. T. Harker - Sales} in Paris whether there was any alternative method of taking a car to France without going through the R.A.C. on this side, and to avoid paying the duty. We suggest it is very probable that we shall wish to send more than one EAC. car to France, therefore, as the duty will be approximately £1000 per car, I thought it was worth while making enquiries as to other ways of getting cars into France. We attach herewith a copy of a note from HK.{Col. T. Harker - Sales} which gives particulars of the Touring Acquit. It would appear that we can take advantage of this in taking the EAC. car into France without paying duty and without going through the R.A.C. As regards the International Driving Pass. These are only issued by the R.A.C. but fortunately, most of our men now are in possession of French Driving Licences so that it would not be necessary for them to have an International Driving Licence. Although it will be the end of the month before we have a car ready to cross over, we should like to know whether the full duty should be paid on the car or whether we shall take it out under the Touring Acquit?
