EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} from BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} WOT. X3426 RECEIVED BY3-P25.8.22. 40/50. RATTLES FROM GEARBOX SIDE SHAFT. RE EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}3/H15822. I think there are two ways of combating above;- a/- Thicker oil. b/- Ground straight spurs for side shaft which would not be so susceptible to knocking as Viscosity falls. The present clearances are reasonable and a drop to .002" to .004" would not eliminate the trouble, as from chassis I have tried with .006" I am sure .004" clearance will cause knocking, and if gears just scrape through on test they will "develop" trouble in a few hundred miles.
