| To Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} From RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} Re Failure of Bentley Fan Spindles. A production built fan EB.189 which had failed in service due to breakage of the spindle E.52966, was checked for balance on strips using the Production balancing tackle for this purpose. The fan and hub assembly proved very badly out of balance and in order to make the necessary correction the fan blades had to be weighted at the tip as indicated below. Actually the balance of the fan was so very badly out as to be obvious when normally assembled on the spindle bearings, and the vibration which has been taking place due to the unbalanced blades can be judged from the worn condition of the adjustment trunnion and pull rod. 7 1/2 GRAMS 1 GRAM. 3 1/2 GRAMS RHC{R.
