Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} 11/3 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry{Shadwell Grylls}3/R.7.4.37. Your memo on Bentley complaints came up at the Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Conference yesterday. There were certain items about which he requested more information by next Monday. One of these was what we were going to do with the large number of troubles with the rear axle. We are wondering, therefore, if you are in a position to say whether any trouble has been caused by jacking up under the aluminium centre box. It would appear that 35-EX went to France without the .002 nip on the outers of the pinion bearing. Possibly some of the Bentleys are leaving the Works in this condition, and this would allow considerable deflection of the pinion shaft. With regard to oil leaks from the axle tube flange, we have found it impossible on production to use 5/16 bolts, and are, therefore, fitting 18 1/4 bolts instead of 12.
