be adopted i.e., introducing a fabric universal drive? A
scheme of this sort would be much better than the one at present
used as the laminated drive has always been a source of trouble
on the Test Beds as the clearance allowed is onyl .004" between
the drive and the magneto drum.
On the last day of the test on the Hangar there
appeared to be an enormous amount of crankcase pressure, the
cause being presumably due to blowing passed the pistons - (see
test bed report).
TEST BED - 50 HRS. RUN.
The engine was taken off the Hangar and rigged up on
the test bed.
The power was poor being 25 HP. below rated 360 corrected
for barometer. Towards the end of the first 10 hrs. the back
pressure became so bad that it was thought advisable to examine
the pistons and cylinders. The rings of every piston were
carboned up and the cylinders were perfectly dry, no sign of
oil on the walls whatever. The pistons were cleaned and the
rings freed. The power was improved but did not quite come
up to the schedule.
While the cylinders were off, several valves were taken
out and the valve stems cleaned, being carboned up.
Magnetos. During the 2nd. days running, after 65 hrs. a magneto
failed (A.{Mr Adams} side, firing exhaust side plugs). The contact points
were badly burnt. The magneto was sent to Mr. Ellis who re-
ported that the winding had failed.
