EXPERIMENTAL REPORT. Expl. No. REF: Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}3/LG19.8.24.

Oil Pipe Damper. The Oil Pipe Dampers on the camshaft feed and drain pipes very quickly worked loose and had to be tightened up after the days running and at the end of the Hangar Test the brass clips did not grip the oil pipes at all but simply danced about with the vibration. It may be advantageous to make the clips wider and to make them so that they grip the pipes so as to allow the rubber to take the vibration, as they are now, they do not do any good at all.

Valve Springs and Caps. At the end of the second day, B.6. Inlet Valve Spring (outer) was broken. This was replaced. At the end of each day it was necessary to go round the valve spring caps and tighten them up.

Hand Starter. The Hand Starter seized up at the end of the second day. This was changed. The condition of this Starter when dismantled was very poor. The shafts and wheels were all rusted up, and it was due to the rust and deposit that the Starter had seized. As it was quite new, we suggest that the condition of the Hand Starter should be noted, by dismantling, on production engines after an endurance test, and cleaned, if necessary. A full report on the action of castrol on steel will follow this report.

Magneto Drives. At the end of the 4th. day, the leaves of one of the magneto drives were nearly all broken and the other three drives had to be changed owing to the excessive clearance due to wear. The alignment of the magnetos were checked and found to be O.K. Could the scheme used in driving the Goshawk Water Pump
