HYDRAULIC SHOCK DAMPERS.
(FURTHER IMPROVEMENTS).

We have pleasure in sending this week the improved arrangement of valves in the hydraulic shock dampers with the object of making the reversal soft, and providing a free position for about 1" at rest.

It will be noticed that this arrangement is simpler, or quite as simple, as the two valve arrangement, both in the casting and in the workmanship, and also its functioning is superior.

It appears a patentable scheme and should have attention first so that it is fully covered, and is put into experimental production at an early date as we think it may prove a valuable asset to our cars.

It will be noticed that we have not had to abandon our independence of viscosity or forced replacement of the oil from one side of the piston to the other, and we think it would have very very undesirable to have a free place in the centre of the stroke of the shock damper when the car would be rapidly re-turning to its position of equilibrium after a road shock.

I think we ought to take a provisional patent for this modification.

R. {Sir Henry Royce}
