20-HP. Rear Axle Gear Failures.

We have today had returned to us from Sales Dept. a new chassis which has developed a noisy axle, i.e. Axle No. 746. (11x50).

There is no doubt that the axle at present is unsatisfactory and would certainly never have left the Works in this condition.

On investigation the Works report that the cause of this development is that the gears are showing signs of slight "digging in", but they also point out that this is a pair of E.N.V. Gears which we are not now using.

As there is likely to be an enquiry as to the actual failure and prospects of others giving similar trouble, it is rather important that we should give the matter serious consideration to satisfy ourselves that this is likely to be an exception only, and we are not likely to have further trouble in this respect on cars which are going into the customers hands.

* Since Jan.1st.
Apart from this we have only had four cases of this trouble developing on test, out of the 91 gears we have passed.* These gears have failed on test due to cutting in, particulars as follows:-

No. 826. 12 x 50. R.R. Standard Cut gears. Failed on dynamometer.

No. 727. 11 x 50 Air Hardened Gears. Failed on dynamometer.

No. 850. 11x 50. Failed on road after passing O.K. on dynamometer.

No. 345. 11 x 50. 9" cutter. Rolls-Royce cut gear. Failed on dynamometer.

We should like to hear from you whether, in view of the above information, there is any action to take in regard to axles which we have delivered or are about to deliver, or whether we are in a position to
