X6135. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wst.5/AD November 26th, 1931. Messrs. S. Smith & Sons,Ltd. Cricklewood Works, London, N.W.2. For the attention of Mr.Nichols. Dear Sirs, With reference to your letter of the 24th inst. reference S.1. we would like to be informed how much percentage extra cost would be involved in producing the instrument dials photographically as compared with printing them. We were under the impression that the increase was small as compared with the total cost of the instrument. With regard to electric clocks, we thank you for your interesting notes on these. The clocks we have tested were both of British manufacture and were arranged to continue functioning for about 1/2 hr. after disconnecting the winding impulses occurring approximately 10 a minute. This arrangement we like best as in the event of a fuse "blowing" or the battery being disconnected for a short time the clock will go on functioning and thereby obviate the necessity for resetting the hands, also the magnet coils will tend to remain cooler. One of the clocks had a small automatic circuit breaker incorporated which prevented the magnet coils overheating in the event of the clock stopping on contact due to a low battery voltage. We have had this clock on test for 18 months and we are satisfied that with this protection there will be little danger of fire. | ||
