328 (Experimental Dept.) Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry{Shadwell Grylls}5/R.{Sir Henry Royce} 19th November, 1936. F.O. Hickling, Esq., Messrs. Ransome & Marles Bearing Co.,Ltd., NEWARK on TRENT. Dear Hickling, We have run into trouble with one of our gearboxes which we think might interest you. At the back end of the side shaft, the roller bearing is retained by a left-hand shredded nut locked by a tab washer. After about an hour on dynamometer we found the tab washer sheared and the nut loose. We are wondering whether you have met this trouble before on other people's gearboxes and, if so, whether you have some easy cure. We are sending you a layout showing the arrangement of the gears. We have just ordered some more of the higher capacity Bentley pinion bearings, and should be grateful if you would expedite their arrival. Yours sincerely, | ||
