Replying to Hm{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs}/NRC{N. R. Chandler}3/MW8.3.28., we fully appreciate the importance of keeping the number of jigs, tools, replacement stocks etc. down to the minimum by using existing pieces.

An example of this recently is that on the new designs for India 3. and EAC.10 we have made use of the same brake linkage jaws throughout the system on both cars. We have also managed to use the same brake parts in many cases.

Generally it is our intention to watch this point as much as possible in the future, but it will be understood that it is practically impossible for us to search through all the back work with a view to finding an existing piece, and we shall be compelled to rely to a fix great extent on Derby to prevent us instructing a number of only slightly differing parts by themselves embodying existing pieces in the detailing, and advising us of the change.

We know that we cannot always accept their recommendations: an instance in point is that on the EAC.10 gearbox we were asked to make use of an existing broach. The resulting modifications to the box would however have been so extensive that we considered this economy was unjustified.
