X.3564. RE LUCAS SUPPLEMENTARY DISTRIBUTING BOX.

We understand from your memo EFC4/T24/5/19 that it is necessary for the charging switch to have two contacts, so as to joint the three simultaneously; we agree to call this a three-point switch (not double-pole, or two-way)

We assume that each of the ebonite bushes shewn in the bottom of scheme No.69 permits of a duplex armoured cable from each of the four or five circuits shewn, and that one wire is brought to the lower buss bar immediately opposite the bush. The other wire has to be left long, and somewhat loose, to pass over the insulating bar shewn between the two buss bars. I do not look upon this as entirely satisfactory, and orderly, but assume it is the best we can do in the time at our disposal.

Are we correct also in assuming that the end of the conductor is curled up, and pushed in under the screw, probably by first removing the screw and merely jamming the end of the screw down on to the wire. Do you consider this is a better connection than can be made by the more ordinary schemes ?

We think the best thing for you to do is to send us for our future guidance, one of these boxes with a specimen of the wire connections.

We are of the opinion that the whole electrical equipment will be simpler if carried out in the complete scheme shewn on LeC.1089, that is, with the ballast resistance on the instrument board.

(Contd.)
