Cancelling rollers on Goshawk engine valves and replacing them with new case-hardened rockers with curved ends.

Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} (4226 R3/M21.6.22. RE. GOSHAWK ENGINE X.4229. X.4226. It is understood that we are cancelling rollers on the top of the valves because of the flats forming. We have concluded that the flats formed through the inertia of the roller preventing it rotating in space which naturally cannot be cured by any alteration in the friction which would not give other troubles. We have decided therefore to abandon the roller and have the new rockers made with curved ends which will be carefully case-hardened. The ends of the valves will also need hardening. As there will be alterations to the valve washers and the rockers we shall be pleased if you will hold the production of these over for further instructions. The rocker shaft will also be lowered to bring the contact point right; this will affect the tappet rods and the supports. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
