With reference to the curves shown on sheets 7 and 8 of the above report dealing with the effect of orifice coefficient with the 1.6 diameter inlet valve, it does not seem legitimate to us to do each series of tests with exactly the same timing.

The effect of small modifications such as removing the inlet gate boss and increasing the trepanning in the cylinder head will be to modify the gas flow to some extent as is shown clearly by the curves themselves. Thus if the timing is altered slightly to give the best results with each modification, it would then be easy to assess the ultimate effect of the modification on the breathing capacity of the engine.
