-2- R.R. 493A (20H) (D.A. 652 20-3-24) J.R.D. EXPERIMENTAL REPORT Expl. No. REF HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/AJL/LG26.8.24 The C. and A.{Mr Adams} washer in the centre joint of the exhaust manifold has burnt out twice, causing bad exhaust blows. The C. and A.{Mr Adams} washer in the down pipe has also burnt out twice. The extra lagging straps on the front and rear silencers are sufficient to keep the lagging in place. (There are 5 straps on the front silencer and 4 on the rear.) There is now plenty of clearance between the down pipe and dynamo coupling, also between the front silencer and the N/S front road spring. The stronger suspension for the front silencer holds it rigid, and has given no trouble. The fish tail has opened out slightly. This is a stronger type fish tail than standard. STEERING. Has given no trouble. It was very bad for wobbles, high speed and low when Rapson Super Comfort tyres were fitted, but is quite reasonable with Dunlops. No side steering tube springs broken. Pivots appear to be in good condition. We have had no trouble from stiffening up owing to insufficient lubrication. It is noticeable, however, that the steering becomes slightly freer after driving fast over rough roads. There has been no instance of steering taking charge in the ordinary course of running. ENGINE. Has run very well throughout. Valves (Silchrome) have been run with no tappet clearance, and are in excellent condition. No signs of burning or pitting. They have not been touched during the test. Valve guides have worn slightly, but not excessively; the guides are phosphor-bronze and broached. Oil consumption is excessive. We have been running for approx. 6,000 miles without any extra cylinder oil. This reduced the oil consumption considerably and has apparently had no ill-effects upon the engine. Price's Winter 'Huille de Luxe' has been used. Engine noises do not appear to be any more pronounced than contd :- | ||
