X 1370 Exptl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}5/KW. 1st May, 1936. The Dunlop Rim & Wheel Co.Ltd., Poleshill, Coventry. For the attention of Mr. Sharp. Dear Sirs, Thank you for your letter of the 30th April, reference GES/PBC/CEH.975, showing us your two suggestions for a 5 x 18 rim for our Phantom III chassis. We wonder whether you could send us a further print of one of these drawings, showing the tyre in its loaded condition. We think it is possible we should have to increase the track in order to have sufficient clearance between the tyre and the steering connections. If more clearance is required we presume you have no objection to an increase in track of the car of, say, 1". With regard to the two types of wheel, at the moment we prefer the open type, firstly because it is lighter, and secondly because of the important consideration of getting sufficient air for cooling the brake drums. Will you therefore let us know whether in your experience the open type is in any way inferior to the type we use at present. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
