My Dear Grylls, With reference to the high capacity New Departure bearings, I have now had an opportunity of looking this up, the following being my comments. NEW DEPARTURE 3211: The overall dimensions of this bearing according to my information are 55 x 100 x 21 mm, this being equivalent to our standard LJ.55. The New Departure bearing contains eleven balls 1/2" diameter whereas our bearing contains eleven balls 17/32" diameter, and from this you will appreciate that our bearing has a better capacity than the New Departure, and taking a theoretical consideration at 3,000 r.p.m., the New Departure will have a capacity of 710 lbs., whereas ours will have 790 lbs. NO. 3308: The dimensions of this bearing are 40 x 90 x 23 mm and is equivalent to our MJ.40, the New Departure containing eight 19/32" balls and our bearing containing nine 17/32" balls. From this you will note that while we have one more ball than the New Departure, the size is smaller, which somewhat balances up matters, although here again taking a theoretical consideration from their basic capacity, the New Departure bearing [Handwritten note in left margin:] HOFF.
