Copy of letter from:- NORTH & SONS LIMITED, Whippendell Road, Watford. Your ref.- Wd {Mr Wood / Mr Whitehead} 4/NJ8626. Ref.- CHK/HC.12. 9th June, 1926. Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., Derby. Dear Sirs, In reply to your letter of the 8th inst. regarding magnetos Nos. 89412 and 88659 we beg to say that although these magnetos were carefully tested we were unable to detect the fault mentioned in your letter of May 5th. Magneto No. 89412 was found to have the sleeve fitted too tight to be operated by the maximum weight used in testing but this condition prevailed whether the magneto was hot or cold. With regard to the magneto No. 88659 this was found to operate so freely as to be slightly noisy but in this instance also we could not detect any difference when the magneto was heated and a new sleeve has now been fitted which is a more accurate fit than the original one. It appears probable that in both cases the magnetos may have been slightly damaged in transit as both machines would be carefully tested before being sent to you. The fitting of these sleeves can be seriously affected by a blow on the cam cage and we think that something of this sort has occurred between the magnetos being tested at your Works and being received here. We have a further four machines returned for the same cause and we hope to be able to send you a report on these machines tomorrow. Yours faithfully, FOR NORTH & SONS LTD. (Sgd) C.H. Kirby.
