/4222 To EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to Sft.{Mr Swift} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}14/LG27.5.24. RE. 20 HP. SPRING DRIVE - DAMPING SPRINGS. We have tried out a set of Springs E.14670 (with handwritten annotation '53208' above) referred to in BY/SS{S. Smith}1/DB{Donald Bastow - Suspensions}29.4.24., in conjunction with Bakelite Friction Discs in 3-G-11. The Test Dept. have also demonstrated to us that there is a good margin before slight rattling develops by reason of the spring drive being damped too much or too little. We agree that these springs can be standardised. Works should check the correctness of the damping load by assembling the drive without the driving springs E.52491, then screwing a 5/16" bolt in the hole provided in Slipper Wheel (front half E.51663) at a radius of 3" - a weight of 8 lbs. suspended from this should then just be sufficient to move the drive when discs are lubricated.
