PHANTOM 111 BRAKES.

With reference to LA.{L. A. Archer}16/T.12.2.37, we find that the brass Countersunk Head Type Rivets which are failing on Customers Cars are not used on Production at the present time, furthermore, there are no Chassis in the Works fitted with Brake Shoes on which this type of rivet has been used.

We understand that the failures are caused by the low tensile figure of brass at braking temperatures, and this was pointed out to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale} some nine months ago, but in view of the fact that 10,000 miles Test Chassis had given no trouble no action was taken on the matter.

It is now evident that all Chassis prior to 48 in 'B' Series (about 250 in number) will have to be changed to the present flat head type of rivets and we understand that instructions to this effect will shortly be issued for Depots to deal with the job.
